Latest
reports emphasise the importance of encouraging more industry to our city
These are the views of business
leaders in our local community who are working towards increasing our local industrial,
service and manufacturing sectors in order to lay a strong foundation for an economy that
is currently underpinned mainly by tourism. It is believed that the loss of some airline
routes has been a result of aircraft departing with only partial loads which in turn
substantially reflects on the profitability of these routes. A concerted effort to attract
industry into Cairns that will utilise air freight is a means of maintaining profitability
for the carriers flying into our city which will of course be of huge benefit to our core
tourism business.
Where
better to open new industrial businesses than
South Cairns Business Park.
South Cairns Business Park has been designed to be the
citys first fully integrated industrial park. The existing release and the future
stages of the park will cater for the necessary industrial land requirement for this city
for the next five years.
With land prices starting at $98
per square metre this area has been designated as the preferred industrial precinct under
the greater Cairns strategic management plan. We are receiving some renewed interest of
late from both local and national companies. Construction of the new Army barracks is
currently underway.
Please note Lots 23.2 and 24 are partially
improved with good structures offering exceptional value for companies wanting to
"fast track" relocation.

Bring me
sunshine !!
From the desk of
Dennis A Crossley
Managing Director
Omega Property Group.
Regular readers of this
column will have worked out by now that I'm a bit musically inclined. Indeed, in an
earlier time your intrepid scribe had a stint at playing music for a living. I was lucky
however, to have had my initiation long before "punk" was a word associated with
music and "rap" was something you did to a present at Christmas.
Which brings me to this
months column. Last month in Cairns (and many more before it), it rained the
proverbial felines and canines. But as sure as Costello follows Abbot, Bacall follows
Bogie and confusion follows GST, shine follows rain.
"Bring me Sunshine"
was the signature tune of a great English comedy duo, Morecambe and Wise. My dad used to
watch them on our kerosene powered telly and sing me the song afterwards. It seemed to
cheer him up. It sure cheered me up 'cos afterwards he was in such a good mood he'd take
me down the corner shop and buy me a bag full of gobstoppers. How I loved that song!!
But it seems that I'm not the
only one who gets in a good (read positive) mood when sunshine appears. Ask anyone
connected with the property industry in Cairns and they will tell you of the positive
"we are on the way back up" mood that is in the air right now. A casual glance
at the "Doom & Gloom Rag" (occasionally called The Cairns Post) proves that
the sunshine has graced the furrowed brows of even its most sleepy reporter. An article
last week outlined 4 major CBD sites that are under contract and we know of at least
another 2 that will hit the press shortly. These contracts have generated tens of millions
of dollars in sales and will generate double that amount in construction work. Gratifying
is the fact that most of these sites, when redeveloped, will be occupied by major national
companies who are securing their position in Cairns whilst it is still affordable and more
to the point, whilst the sites are still available.
All this of course comes on top
of the imminent opening of our new NBL stadium and the great work Geoff Donaghy and his
team are doing down that end of town in getting convention business into the region. Also
add the proposed redevelopment of the Esplanade (which apart from anything else will give
the town an additional "feel good factor"), the long awaited City Port
redevelopment blueprint from the Cairns Port Authority and the take up of vacant shops in
the CBD and one could be very justified in believing the corner has been turned.
But friends beware the downside
of sunshine. Remember my dad bought me all those lollies after hearing the song? Well
years later the result was long hours at the dentist, removing large amounts of built up
gobstopper goo! Come to think of it though, it made me realise that too much of anything
is not good but things approached in a controlled fashion can be your best friend and most
profitable asset.
Maybe we should have sung the
song to Little Johnny after his 5 minutes of sunshine jibe, or the grim reaper Paul in an
effort to make his bananas grow quicker, I don't know. But what I do know is that I'm
stocking up on 15+ and going for it.
Any one for a
gobstopper..........................??
